Mexico announces 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Presidency of the Republic

The first phase of the National Platform to Monitor Sustainable Development Goals was launched

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto (EPN) led the installation of the National Council for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which will make it possible, “To define the route to incorporate different visions in favor of a common cause: laying the foundations of the future to which we aspire.”

“Eradicating poverty, and achieving sustainable and inclusive development, requires profound changes in the way societies and nations live, interact and relate to each other,” said the President.

He declared that to establish a long-term vision to guide the continuity of national efforts with the 2030 Agenda, we will establish two new mechanisms:

1. With the coordination of the President’s Office, a National Strategy for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda will be elaborated.

• With the support of all the sectors of this Council, it must incorporate a long-term vision to guarantee the continuity of efforts and guide the elaboration of future National Development Plans.

• The National Strategy, for which a broad consultation process will be launched, will be the implementation plan, and the National Council will be responsible for its implementation.

2. Today we launched the first phase of the National Platform for Monitoring the Sustainable Development Objectives, which will allow us to determine how we are progressing in the achievement of each of the 17 objectives in the 2030 Agenda. Information will be available on the following website:”

The president also made two specific commitments:

FIRST: The 2018 budget will take the Sustainable Development Objectives into consideration. So that we can confirm this commitment in the proposal we will submit for the 2018 budget, we will incorporate the criteria defined in this Agenda.

SECOND: “In the next legislative period, I will submit a bill to modify the Planning Law, in order to incorporate all these references, these 17 objectives outlined in this Sustainable Development Plan, into the National Planning Law in order to lend it continuity, and serve as a reference for actions undertaken in the following years.”

He added that, “The objectives we are setting today, the objectives we have committed to and included in this 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, must have continuity, be permanent and guarantee the efforts of all the orders of government and society as a whole, regardless of the time or moment. Hence the commitment for all these criteria and references to be included in the National Planning Law.”
