European
Union-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee Overcomes Disagreements
Lima, May 1 – The Joint Parliamentary Committee between the European Parliament and the Mexican Parliament
met within the framework of the EuroLat Assembly in Lima [April 29-May 1] in order to take stock of developments in relations
between the European Union and the Central American [sic] country.
This pivotal meeting, chaired by the Vice-President of the
European Parliament for Latin American Affairs, Manuel Antonio dos Santos, put an end to the slight unease and assorted misunderstandings
which had arisen between the two sides.
“I am extremely satisfied that the conclusions we have
adopted today allow us to clarify our positions,” declared Manuel dos Santos. “Mexican parliamentarians had come
here expressing a degree of unease about what they took to be a lack of interest in the work of the Joint Committee on the
part of Europeans and excessive cultivation of the strategic capacity with Brazil to the detriment of relations with Mexico.”
Manuel dos Santos, who expressed the conviction that this
meeting “has served to repair the bonds of trust between both parties,” stated his belief that the forthcoming
meeting on 16 May in Strasbourg “will continue this convergence effort so keenly favored by all parliamentary representatives
on both sides.”
